Remington Super 60 - 4 Christmas Songs on 1 EP

Remington Super 60: Christmas EP
(Nordpolen Musikklub, Julepakke06, Norway, 33 rpm, small hole)
Remington Super 60 is the brainchild of Norwegian Christoffer Schou, who started the band (or project, as in the early days, it was just Christoffer) late 1998. In the more than 20 years that Remington Super 60 exists, the band (that had different members over the years, with Christoffer as the one constant) released records on all kinds of formats (digital, CD, vinyl) on various labels. Christoffer must have a soft spot for Christmas, because even some of his regular releases feature Christmas songs. None of the Christmas songs that Christoffer and his band have recorded over the years had been released on vinyl so far. But that is now set right, as our good friends of the Nordpolen Musikklubb, also from Norway, stepped in and released four Remington Super 60 Christmas songs on a 7"EP for the Christmas season of 2019, as their sixth annual Christmas release. As always packed in a very stylish sleeve, we have a very pleasant sounding EP here, that for sure will make a lot of spins on my turntable this Christmas season.

The EP opens with Christoffer's first Christmas song, from 2001, when Remington Super 60 was merely a solo project. Recorded in Christoffer's bedroom in Frederikstad, 'Christmas Song For Melanie' opened Remington Super 60's second CDEP, 'Christmas In May' (see, Christoffer must really like Christmas, even celebrating it in May!). The song is a pleasant sounding indie pop / casiopop song, that reminds me a of The Boy Least Likely To (another band that loves Christmas). The song was written with a girl from the Philippines in mind, who Christoffer had met on a indiepop forum, and had told him she hated Christmas songs. Christoffer’s reaction; he wants to write a Christmas song for her every day! Now, does that mean he really likes her, or that he doesn’t like her at all? I guess the first, as he sings that it makes her feel okay and smile. Second song on the A-side, 'A Winter Song', is the most recent song on the EP. It was originally released as a digital single last year and brings the sunshine pop of The Free Design to mind - and that can be considered a big compliment, as that band has recorded some great Christmas songs.

The over to the B-side. The piano-driven, poppy and Beatlesque (although The Thrills also comes to mind, and the Beach Boys are mentioned in the press release as the main influence of this song) 'Here Comes Christmas' is taken from the group's third full length album, 'Go System Go!'. At that time, Remington Super 60 had turned into a real band, and this song was not recorded in a bedroom, but in a professional studio. The last song, another stand-alone single, 2017's 'Another Christmas Song' is not a cover from Jethro Tull's song of the same name, but a dreampop song that has additional female vocals (probably by Christoffer's wife Elisabeth Thorsen, who is in the current line up of the band), that sounds so relaxed that listening to this song is the best remedy of getting rid of any Christmas stress.

All in all, another absolute winner for the Nordpolen Musikklubb, but we wouldn't expect anything less, given what great Christmas 7”’s the label has put out so far. You can find copies on Discogs or by contacting the label through Facebook. Don’t wait too long, as all the Nordpolen Musikklub singles sell out fast!

All four songs can be found on Youtube.
